J.J. is the Assistant Managing Partner of the Oakland office and Co-Chair of the firm's Employment practice group. He provides consultation services for and has defended employers against wrongful termination and discrimination matters, including claims for violation of state and federal law. He has also represented employers in claims brought by the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing and the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
He is also Co-Chair of the Real Estate practice group. He has represented real estate professionals in all types of civil litigation, including claims for malpractice and fraud, as well as business and contract litigation. He regularly provides business and risk management consultations, and has taught seminars on various real estate topics, for real estate trade associations, real estate companies and brokerages, and malpractice insurers.
J.J. has represented general contractors and subcontractors in complex construction litigation involving apartment buildings, condominiums, multi-tract residential development and single family homes. He has also defended and prosecuted express indemnity and breach of contract actions on behalf of developers, general contractors, and subcontractors.
He has been retained as defense counsel for insured and self-insured companies and individuals in high exposure personal injury and property damage litigation, including high exposure premises liability claims, construction site injury, motor vehicle, and products liability cases.
J.J. has tried numerous jury trials to verdict in Alameda County, San Francisco County, Contra Costa County and Solano County. His trials have been published in California Jury Verdicts Weekly and Verdict Search California Report, including many complete defense verdicts. Some of his published trials include Bauer v. Black Mountain Development, Bradford v. Ideal Plumbing, Campbell v. Wolfe, Crowder v. Cox, Ivy v. Kige, Lofthouse v. Pekru, Mangalindan v. Barker, and Yoakum v. Williams.
He also has extensive arbitration and mediation experience in cases throughout Northern California in both state and federal court. In June of 2010, J.J. participated in a roundtable discussion sponsored by JAMS. The discussion focused on trends in professional liability claim and litigation, coverage issues pertaining to professional liability policies, the effect of the economy on professional liability claims and litigation, and mediation costs.
