Sharon Hightower to Speak at Santa Clara County Bar Association Conference

Sharon Hightower, a partner in the San Jose office, will be on a panel discussing “Lawyers and Local Government: Public Service and Advocacy” for the Santa Clara County Bar Association (SCBBA) on Monday, December 14 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. The conference will be held at the SCCBA Conference Center, 31 North Second Street, 4th Floor, San Jose, California.

Advocacy before public boards and commissions:

  • What's effective before a legislative body (written communications; oral communications; time limits; making a record; etc.)
  • What is it like to be a member of a legislative body (elective vs. appointed; time investment; meeting preparation; etc.)
  • Quasi-judicial actions by legislative bodies (legal considerations, standards, how counsel provide advice; etc.)
  • Adjudicatory hearings before boards and commissions (relaxed evidentiary standards; how to protect the record and ensure a fair hearing; the view from the hearing officer/panel; advocacy tips; what is effective advocacy and what isn't; etc.)
